Heart the Lover focuses on our narrator, who, in her senior year of college, meets Sam and Yash, who bring intensity and passion to their friendship and become intertwined with one another. Decades later, the narrator is living a comfortable life with her husband and children when a surprise visit brings back the past, forcing her to confront her youth.
This has been one of my anticipated reads for this year as I’ve seen it absolutely everywhere and so I am so glad I enjoyed it! It’s very similar to Talking at Night by Claire Daverley and also similar in tone to Normal People by Sally Rooney, which are other books that I love.
This is a great literary fiction read with a hint of dark academia, which I found quick and easy to read. The book kept a good pace and had a lot packed into it despite it being a short book. I loved the style of writing where big plot reveals are written in a simple sentence. I also found the second half of the book very emotional, especially the ending, which made me love the book even more.
‘The feeling catches me off guard.
Oh.
Love.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, which did surprise me slightly as the love triangle situation isn’t normally the trope I go for, but it worked in this story. This was a great introduction to Lily King, and I’m looking forward to getting around to her other books.
