The Wedding People is about Phoebe Stone, who arrives at a grand beachside hotel in Rhode Island but is immediately mistaken for one of the wedding people. She’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall Inn who isn’t here for the big event, which completely ruins the bride’s plans. Once she hears that her elaborate destination wedding could be ruined by a divorced and depressed stranger, she is furious. Lila has spent months accounting for every detail and every possible disaster except for someone like Phoebe. But soon, both women find their best-laid plans derailed and an unlikely confidante in one another.
I didn’t know what to expect from this book, but it’s been loved online, and I’m glad I gave it a go! This book covers love, friendship, dysfunctional families, and the unexpected paths that lead to happiness. It’s also written in the third person, and this style of writing reminded me of My Friends by Fredrick Backman. It’s a book where readers deep dive into the characters, learning how their past is affecting their present.
‘Because when you are happy, everywhere is a happy place. And when you are sad, everywhere is a sad place.’ – p17
There were some lengthy chapters which I felt were longer than needed; however, the sections focused on dialogue were my favourite and improved the flow of the book. I really loved Lila and her mother, as I thought they were both funny characters, and I wish we had seen more of their interactions together.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book despite it having a bit of a predictable storyline for me. The book definitely picked up as it went along, and I thought the ending fitted perfectly.
