My Inner Child Wants to Murder Mindfully by Karsten Dusse

In this book, written by Karsten Dusse and translated by Florian Duijsens, we see how Björn wants to stop killing, yet killing always finds him. He’s surrounded by stressors as he’s got a prisoner in his basement, he’s dealing with the parents committee at his daughter’s preschool, and to top it all, he’s being blackmailed. To manage his stress, Björn turns to a mindfulness coach to learn about the unmet needs of his inner child, but as he begins to listen, he finds that all his creative solutions involve murder.

This is the second book in the series after Murder Mindfully, which is now a Netflix series; however, it can be read as a standalone, which I did. There is enough information to understand the characters, background and plot. This book is very easy to read and includes lots of short, snappy chapters, making it super quick to get through.

I enjoyed learning more about Björn through his inner child, as we got more of an insight into his parents and upbringing. The internal monologue that Björn had with his inner child was interesting to read, along with the conversations with his therapist. I loved how clever Björn is, and with letting his inner child come through, we saw some creative solutions to their problems.

I wish we got a little more from the plot and seen more action, as I enjoyed the bits we did see. I loved Björn and Sascha‘s relationship and dynamic, so I wanted to see more of that too. The book reminded me of the You books/Netflix series, where murder appears to be the solution to many problems, but it often comes back to bite you.

Overall, this is a fun, light-hearted thriller. I enjoyed the book more as it went along, and I liked how everything got wrapped up at the end. The subtle dark humour is a nice touch, and whilst it wasn’t my favourite thriller, it was nice to read something a bit different.

Thank you to Faber Books for sending me a copy of this book!
