Fleabag The Scriptures by Phoebe Waller-Bridge

*minor spoilers ahead*

Fleabag The Scriptures is perfect if you’re a fan of the TV series. I enjoyed the show so much and was so excited to read the screenplay and relive the story and all the funny moments again. This book included the script from both series, with series two being my favourite.

Fleabag is all about a woman living in London grappling with family, work, sex, love and loss. It’s a story that has you feeling all the feels, it’s funny, sad, hopeful and tense all in one go. It handles complicated love stories, with the “hot” priest in season two being a key part of this. There are also hard-hitting moments in terms of friendship and family, for example with Boo and Claire. I particularly loved Fleabag and Claire’s relationship, which perfectly captures complicated sisterly/family relationships well.

I also love that we never learn Fleabag’s true name, and some of the other characters’ names, to get an idea of how Fleabag sees herself and others in her life. As well as this, having Fleabag break the fourth wall so much was entertaining and a perfect way to add humour to those tense moments. It made it even more interesting when the priest finally started spotting these moments when Fleabag broke and often questioned her to solve the mystery.

Last year I really enjoyed reading Barbie The Screenplay, and so when I saw this book I knew I had to read it, as it’s so cool to read a show/film in a different format. As I’d already watched Fleabag on TV, it was nice to know what the characters looked like and where the scenes took place. Even though this is described in the screenplay, it really confirmed for me how spot-on the casting was. It made those hard-hitting moments about grief and love even more intense. As well as this, minor characters such as Martin and Godmother were captured so well, perfectly executing the relationship and dynamic between all the characters.

I’d definitely recommend you read this book if you enjoyed the show, as it was like reliving the TV series in the best way.
