The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood

*spoiler-free*

The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood is a magical realism/romantic comedy book surrounding Delphie who suddenly enters the afterlife. She is surprised when she is met with a handsome man and feels an instant connection. However, they are soon interrupted and the dreamy stranger heads back to Earth, leaving Delphie. Met with Merritt, Delphie’s afterlife therapist, she offers Delphie a deal where she can return to her previous life if she can find the mystery man and get him to share a kiss within 10 days. Delphie, who is sure she has just met her soulmate, is determined despite being told that the man will have no recollection of their previous encounter.

I really enjoyed this book and was impressed by Greenwood’s ability to make a naturally depressing topic such as death and grief into a humorous and light-hearted read. Greenwood made these topics approachable to read but still kept the seriousness of the situation where necessary. The writing is funny especially as it includes some dark humour and a lot of pop culture references. The book also consisted of short chapters which made it very easy to read.

I did find the story quite predictable up until the last 20% of the book where there were great twists and made me love the book even more. The relationships in this story are very wholesome, especially between Delphie and Mr Yoon and Delphie and Cooper. Cooper in particular had great character development which is always enjoyable to read about a main character. Delphie also gave me Bridget Jones vibes adding to her big and bold personality.

Overall, this was a very cute story that reminded me a lot of The Seven Year Slip and The Dead Romantics, both of which I enjoyed. I’d love to read more from Greenwood, so I’ll be adding more of her books to my TBR list!
