The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

*minor spoilers ahead*

After loving The Dead Romantics and seeing this book grow increasingly popular on social media, I knew I had to give it a go. The Seven Year Slip is an easy-to-read magical realism, romance book set within the publishing world. Clementine is our main character, navigating life after the death of her beloved aunt who left behind her apartment with a magic secret, where you can be transported 7 years into the past.

This is very similar to The Dead Romantics in the sense that it plays with the magical realism realm. I do enjoy reading these types of books as I find it refreshing to read after your average romance or general fiction book. I like how you are never too sure which way the story will turn as it’s not identical to real life.

Whilst a predictable read, I found it a very wholesome story. Our other main character, Iwan, is lovely and is who Clementine deserves to have in her life. From the get-go, their relationship is endearing as Iwan fondly refers to her as ‘Lemon’. Their lives continue to intertwine, and you are left constantly rooting for the two characters to find each other again and connect. I do love a book with a happy ending and I’m glad this book fulfilled this.

Love was an invitation into the wild unknown, one step at a time together.

Reading the notes at the end of the book I was shocked to read that Poston’s grandfather died by suicide when she had her book due and how this contributed to the writing of this book. Whilst this was a comforting read it still discusses difficult topics like grief and death, which are always hard to navigate when everyone responds differently. Poston took a very vulnerable situation and was able to formulate a beautiful story around it. I’ll continue to read more of Poston’s books; the next being A Novel Love Story which will be released later in June.
