Heartstopper 5 by Alice Oseman

*spoiler-free*

After quickly finishing Heartstopper Volume 4, I was so excited to get around to Volume 5, the last published book in the series. This volume did not disappoint and was another beautiful addition. I was happy to see at the end of the book the announcement that Heartstopper will conclude in Volume 6. Whilst I am sad the series will eventually end; I am so glad the story is not over yet.

One of my favourite things about the series is how the volumes continue from each other and pick up where the last one left off. This volume discusses the next stage of Charlie and Nick’s relationship, and it is lovely to see them growing even closer together. There is also a storyline around asexuality which was brought in a lot later in the book compared to the Netflix show, but I am glad it was something that originated from the books. Oseman has a talent for incorporating a variety of storylines into her books keeping it refreshing even after the fifth volume.

I do wish that Oliver Spring (Charlie and Tori’s younger brother) was in the Netflix show as I found his character in the books to be warm and charming. Reading online it seems that Oseman didn’t want to go through the process of finding a child actor and decided to have the Spring family consisting of 2 children.

Overall, Volume 5 is another beautiful story, and it is great to see how the volumes get stronger with each addition. They are so easy to read and have become a comfort read for me. As a result, I am so eager to read the other books in the Heartstopper universe such as the novellas and the Solitaire series by Oseman. I’ve already read the novellas (reviews coming soon!) and am halfway through Solitaire and love these books as much as Heartstopper.
