In The Catch, Ed finally meets his daughter’s boyfriend for the first time. Abbie is obsessed with Ryan as he appears to be a real catch, a true gentleman who she has been looking for all her life. Soon comes the announcement that they are now planning to get married, taking everyone by surprise. Ed is quick to have suspicions about Ryan, questioning every comment and action, and is eager to stop the wedding from happening. The wedding is looming and so Ed must act fast.
I’ve had The Catch on my reading list for a while and I am so glad I finally got around to this. The chapters are written in the first person, mostly from Ed’s perspective but sometimes from the view of other characters which was refreshing. There were certain characters I was intrigued by and was hoping that a chapter from their perspective would come up and so when this happened it lived up to my expectations. These chapters were often short and snappy making the book addictive to read. I really like Logan’s style of writing as there was a good balance between scene setting and character development throughout the story.

The book largely follows Ed in his journey to try and discover the “real” Ryan and find any evidence to back up his intuition of distrust. Ed becomes obsessive in tracking Ryan and searching deep for any information about him, quickly resulting in Ed’s life falling apart. With his family and job on the line, Ed becomes desperate trying to convince those closest to him, and eventually himself, that his gut instinct was right. The Catch is a roller coaster with a series of up-and-down events making the reader change their view every few chapters. The book is cleverly written whereby there is enough evidence for both opinions and so it is not until the end of the book that everything becomes clear.
Ryan’s character gave me Joe Goldberg vibes from the Netflix series YOU, which is a show I love and so I was excited to see how his character unravelled. The Catch ended up being much darker than I expected but I enjoyed this element as it felt like the book was leading up to a big event, so I was glad to see this did happen in the book. I did guess some of the minor plot twists, but this did not detract from the overall story, and I was still shocked by the great ending. I like how the book ended as it wrapped up the characters and their story well. The main plot twist of the book was also a lot more emotional than I expected but it proved how invested I was in the story. I love when thrillers are unpredictable enough to keep the reader guessing but not too “out there” that it becomes unrealistic.
Overall, I really enjoyed the twists and turns of this book, and I am excited to get around to Logan’s The Holiday also. I do dislike how similar these covers are as for a while I thought they were the same book but nonetheless, I am looking forward to reading another book by Logan! I would definitely recommend The Catch to anyone looking for an addictive thriller to read.
